Origin of Lord Shani as per Skand Puran
• Characteristic of Lord Shani
• Lord Shani & Lord Sun
• Lord Shani & King Harish Chandra
• Lord Shani & Muni Piplad
• Lord Shani cursed by his wife
• Lord Shani, Ravana & Hanuman
• Lord Shani & King Dashrath

As per the story narrated from Bhavishya Puran, Sun is the father and Chhaya is the mother of Lord Shani. Chhaya has been called as Vikshubha or Suvarana also. In ‘Ganapati’ section of this Puran it has also been made clear that since his childhood, Lord Shani was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and Lord Krishna.
Since his childhood, he remained absorbed in the devotion and the dedication of his deity, Lord Krishna. It is said that Lord Shani, remaining absorbed and thoughtful of his deity makes people deprive of their sins and pains through his three pronged lance and grants them the knowledge of their true form, thus breaking off the shackles of their misdeeds. Our Epics speak of Lord Shani,  riding over the vulture, wearing blue cloths carrying bow and a trident (three pronged lance). As per Vedic astrology, Lord Shani owns seven riders i.e. an Elephant, the Horse, the Deer, an Ass, a Dog, a Buffalo and the Vulture. Its a slow moving planet having four arms. As per ‘Bhavishya Puran’, his face is looking polite and the eyes are half-opened. He always remains absorbed in the thoughts of Lord Vasudev (Lord Krishna). His pours are wet in deep thoughts of Lord Krishna. Lord Shani always remain in the prayers of his deity, he has lustre on his face like that of  the burning fire, and he is a blackish beauty in complexion and wears the yellow cloths.
He also has a most important and the righteous post among planets just because he acts as a courtier of the God. He owes the ideal role of Guru by purifying people through making them to bear with the results of their misdeeds, thus making them the pious and the pure ones.

  • Characteristic of Lord Shani

As per our ancient books, related to Lord Shani, this Universe came into existence as a result of the desire of the Almighty God. The three gods, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are shouldering their duties that are entrusted to them as the god of creation, the operation and the destruction respectively.

Lord Shiva is shouldering the responsibilities of destruction i.e. responsibility of punishing the rascals for their all misdeeds. So, from amongst the nine sons of Lord Sun – Yama and Lord Shani, as a member of his helping youth. He gave both of them, the most important role. Yama was entrusted with the work of making living beings to undergo the results of their misdeeds, after death. However, Lord Shani was entrusted the same work, to make them to undergo the result of their misdeeds in their life time itself. This is the reason why Lord Shani became notorious as a cruel and an anguish planet, but he can be mollified through the worship of Lord Shiva

The Story of Lord Shani & Lord Sun

As per the story in our ancient religious books, Lord Sun entrusted each of his sons the work of one world. However, Lord Shani was not satisfied with it and he started planning to attack the other worlds in order to take them under his territory. Lord Sun couldn't’t bear with such an action of Lord Shani and tried his best to bring him round.
However when Lord Shani didn't’t listen to him, he went to Lord Shiva and asked him to forbid Lord Shani doing this mischievous act. Now, Lord Shani did not comply with it and got ready to fight against his deity, Lord Shiva. He scarred Shiva Sena inclusive of Veerbhadra and Nandi etc.  At this, Lord Shiva opened his third eye (the eye of destruction) and the slayer aspect of Lord Shani in response. With the intersection of both the sights, a new and a rare auspicious bright light was created, which covered the whole world of Lord Shani.
Looking at this, Shiva, the Lord of destruction attacked over Lord Shani by his trident and by this attack Lord Shani became unconscious. Now, Sun got restless because of the love for his son and prayed humbly to Lord Shiva to save his life.Lord Shiva was moved away at the request of Lord Sun and saved the life of Lord Shani.
When Lord Shani gained consciousness, he apologised from Lord Shiva and acceded to his all powerfulness and finally submitted himself to Lord Shiva, who accepted him at his service. Lord Shiva, since that day entrusted him with the responsibility of making living beings to undergo the results of their misdeeds.
Since that day, Lord Shani started performing his duty. He is never partial in giving them the results of their misdeeds. He is neither a friend nor a foe to anyone. He does his duty to all; the gods or the devil gods; to an ascetic or a chaste; to a sage or a household, he treats them all equally. He (Lord Shani) does not spare anyone in punishing for his misdeeds.
